Ellie Smith

Aug 2, 2012   //   by wagona   //   Making a Difference  //  No Comments

Bullying is one of the most difficult problems young people face today, be it online or in person. Fifteen-year-old Ellie Smith experienced a significant amount of bullying herself, but she’s turning that experience into something positive by encouraging local kids to find strength within themselves.

Ellie’s “Don’t Let it Get to You” anti-bullying campaign began in the Clark County School District and has been presented to over 50 schools and more than 25,000 students. The program is now being launched nationally to help reach young people across the nation. Ellie talks about her own experiences being bullied and how the intense pressure to be part of the “in crowd” turned other kids against her. By seeking help from her parents and building up her own self-esteem, she was able to move past it, and she’s inspiring kids across the valley to do the same. A talented singer and actress, Ellie even made a music video that she shares with her audience as part of her presentation, reaching out through song to change people’s lives.

Bullying will always be a part of growing up for some kids, but thanks to the efforts of peers such as Ellie Smith, it doesn’t have to be such a long, lonely road for children in Clark County.

Basch Construction & Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation

Aug 2, 2012   //   by wagona   //   Making a Difference  //  No Comments

Children and families who fall victim to fires often have a long road to recovery ahead of them. In an effort to help alleviate some of their suffering, Basch Construction held its 2nd Annual Golf Classic Tournament to help support the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation.

The tournament was held on June 22nd at Siena Golf Course with firefighters from all departments in Southern Nevada and generous members of the community teeing up and driving down the fairway to benefit the Burn Foundation and its ongoing mission to help the helpless. “The Foundation is a group whose efforts make our communities stronger,” said Jim Baschnagel, owner of Basch Construction. “While fighting fires, firefighters witness burn victims and their families suffer physically and emotionally. Events like the Golf Classic Tournament help generate funds supporting the children and families who have been victims of fires.”

The Foundation hopes to use the funds raised to help send young burn victims to Camp Beyond the Scars, a summer program that gives children who are burn victims a chance to enjoy a positive experience. Since its inception in 1987, the camp has made a difference in the lives of more than 1,600 burned children, placing an emphasis on self esteem and overcoming negativity.

Keeping Your Cool – Soothing Escapes from the Summer Heat

Aug 2, 2012   //   by wagona   //   Livin' Local  //  No Comments

By Haley Etchison

There’s nothing surprising about 108-degree days in Las Vegas. We’ve learned to stock up on sunscreen, guzzle gallons of water and take shelter whenever we can, but our dark sunglasses often block out the blue skies of Southern Nevada. Sometimes it’s easy for us to forget that we live in a summer paradise with plenty of fun and unique ways to stay cool amid the sweltering temperatures.

Into the Pool

While some of the fancier resort pools in town may be off limits to those without a room key, you don’t need to spring for an expensive suite at the Bellagio to enjoy a day at the pool. Savvy south side sunbathers can drift off into a summer escape at Daydream, the pool club at the M Resort (www.themresort.com). Worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of daily Las Vegas life, Daydream offers all the amenities of a high-end day spa on the Strip with a laid back culture catering to 21-and-over locals. With just a $10 entry fee with a local ID, the price is right for young and old alike to pamper themselves. Sun yourself by the infinity-edge pool and spa, chill at the ice-railed bar or escape the heat in style with a cool cabana or daybed that will make you feel like a modern day sultan.

Looking for an upscale day club experience that will still soothe your nerves from daily stress? The Pond at Green Valley Ranch (www.greenvalleyranchresort.com) has got just what you’re looking for. A perfect spot for sun worshipping secluded among towering palms, this 21 and over hideaway charges a $20 cover, but it’s a small price to pay for a slice of heaven on a summer afternoon. Work on your tan, stake out a table in the shade, kick back in a lounge chair or take a relaxing dip in the private pool, complete with its own waterfall. The secluded vibe is more laid-back, spoil-yourself vacation getaway than happening desert dance party, ideal for those seeking to avoid a big hubbub or the swarms of tourists at more congested hotspots. With friends or on your own, The Pond is a great summer escape.

Altitude Adjustment

If chilling out by the water isn’t your thing, don’t hide indoors when the temperature soars. You can always escape to the mountains instead. Run away for a day to Mt. Charleston’s cool climes and share in a tradition of local leisure. Just because the slopes are bare doesn’t mean you can’t have any fun at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort (www.skilasvegas.com). Pack some snacks and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the mountain, taking in the picturesque green scenery and fresh mountain air. For an even better view, cuddle up next to your loved one for a scenic chairlift ride or get some high altitude exercise with a game of disc golf, a variation on the classic outdoor game that’s played with a Frisbee. Not only do you get to stay cool, you can enjoy a relaxing break from the distracting sounds of the city.

For more summer fun on the mountain, check out the return of the Music on the Mountain outdoor concert series. Held one Saturday a month all summer long, this showcase features a wide range of styles, including blues, bluegrass, classic rock, folk and more. August 18th will feature the rockabilly and zydeco sounds of performers such as the Howlin’ Hounds, Blues Storm and the Mike Vaughan Band, while “Women of Da Blues” will take place on September 8th, featuring Janiva Magness, the Sheryl Justice Band and Kelly Sheehan and Friends. At just $15 for an adult ticket, the prices can’t be beat; even better, you get to spread out on a nice blanket under towering pine trees for quality time with friends and family instead of wedging yourself into cramped seats in a noisy, smoke-filled Strip venue.

One Scoop, Two Scoop

Once you’re off the mountain, things will heat up again, so cool down with a tasty treat! You remember those childhood trips to the country fair, when there was no better way to cool off than munching on a tasty snowcone. Purple Penguin Snowcone Shack (www.purplepenguinsnow.com) can bring back some of those good old days and help you keep the tradition alive with your own young ones. Whether you’re 5 or 55, grab yourself one of these smooth snowy treats in any one of 40 delicious flavors and you’ll have it made in the shade. Not only does it taste great, but the memories will help keep you young.

You may have had ice cream in a cone or a cup… but have you ever had it wrapped in a crepe? If not, you’re missing out on one of the most unique desserts around, and you can experience it at Crepe Shack & Waffles (www.crepeshackandwaffles.com). Already a smash hit up and down the west coast, these distinctive Japanese-style crepes will have you looking at dessert in a whole new light. Pile some fresh cut fruit, ice cream, syrup and toppings into a delectable crepe that fits perfectly in your hand and you’re off on a new adventure that brings a fun dose of summer style to a one-of-a-kind treat. It’s like breakfast and dessert all wrapped into one creative little package. Perfect for a warm summer evening!

Summertime in Las Vegas doesn’t have to be a sweat-soaked trial that leaves you begging for fall. Kick back by the pool, take a trip up the mountain or indulge in a soothing dessert in the desert, and you’ll soon find yourself wishing summer would last forever… Or at least long enough for one more scoop.

The Secret’s Out – Naga Thai Dining

It’s hard to “out” one of your favorite restaurants. On the one hand, you want to scream it from the rooftops when you find a local hole-in-the-wall gem that serves excellent food in above average surroundings, and with price points that are more than fair for the quality of food offered. On the other, though, why spill the bean sprouts if all this newfound popularity is sure to have you waiting longer for a table? It’s not for me to decide, as the secret is definitely out on Naga Thai Dining, and although the service has gotten a bit slower than on previous visits, the food is undeniably worth the wait.

Located up the hill (not on the Eastern Ave. front) at 76 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, Naga has a spirited vibe in more ways than one. Modern yet unpretentious décor dictates a space that includes bright colors, a soothing water feature, stainless steel decorator touches and mood music appropriate for casual, date night dining – as long as you don’t mind rubbing elbows with your neighbors. Once you’re seated, the staff brings out a tasting of fried wontons with sauces that illustrate the spice levels of the food via a story of “spirits” designed to gauge intensity based on mood. From the quiet Absent Spirit (no spice) to the Walking Spirit (medium intensity) to the fiery Angry Spirit (pretty darn spicy), it’s a nice way to introduce Thai cuisine newbies to traditional ordering protocol. Soulful details continue with owner Supanee Janko overseeing the creation of her own vegan and meat dish recipes, many of which she developed while cooking in Thailand and California. Particular about what’s on the plate, Janko insists on fresh vegetables and ingredients, often handpicking and purchasing from local Asian vendors.

You really can’t do Thai without Tom Kah soup, and Janko’s rendition is simply outstanding. Bright, flavorful and fresh only begins to describe this coconut milk based soup, the preparation of which successfully balanced the richness of the coconut with the tang of lime and lemongrass.  Not overly heavy, the vegetables were exceptionally crisp and the chicken perfectly poached, a nice beading of chili oil adding the perfect amount of heat to finish the dish. Sublime…really. Moo Ping, a skewered pork satay served with sticky rice (cleverly plated in a cute banana leaf cone), proved to be an excellent appetizer, the caramelized meat respectably exhibiting the Thai sweet, spice and salt trinity.

Entrees include all the norms in Thai cuisine including Stir-Fry (the basil version made with ground beef was a winner), Pad Thai and Curries. We’d heard some buzz on the drunken noodles, aka Pad Kee Mao, and ordered them with beef at Running Spirit spice intensity. Whew…this was some hot stuff! The thick rice noodles held firm and soaked up all the flavors (and spice) the dish had to offer while the baby corn, green beans, red bell peppers and onions provided farm fresh, crunchy textural contrast. Really nice dish. My favorite, though, was the Red Chicken Curry, a designation attributed to my love of worldwide comfort food and the aforementioned Tom Kah Soup, something I could literally eat every day of my life. Made with many of the same flavors including coconut milk, lime, galangal root (much like ginger) and lemongrass, the addition of matchstick bamboo shoots and basil made for a tasty concoction that was even better the next day as leftovers.

Naga Thai is teeny tiny, a true mom and pop endeavor, and as word has traveled about just how good this place is, the service has become a bit frenetic. Growing pains aside, this is one kiss and tell restaurant secret that deserves to be told. For takeout or reservations, call them at 508-2008.

Back to School, Eco-Friendly Style –

New pencils. New notebooks. New backpacks. New clothes. Don’t you just love the beginning of a new school year? But did you ever stop to think about how much waste each new round of education brings? Not to mention the expense! Maybe there’s a better, greener way to prepare.

Bare Necessities

Greening up your school year starts with changing your mindset. Going back to school does not mean having to buy a bunch of new stuff. Before you hit the mall, gather the kiddos and take inventory. If Betsy only used one-third of the paper in last year’s notebooks, rip out those pages and let her use the same ones this year. What about the backpacks? Talk to your kids about this and you’ll find they really don’t need a new one every year. And when it comes to wardrobe, pick up a new outfit for the first day of school, then stick with last year’s clothes, if they still fit.

Once you determine what supplies you need to buy, think about what exactly you are purchasing. Is it made from sustainable materials? Are there environmentally friendly options available? Look for pencils made from recycled material and sold in recyclable packaging. Buy refillable pens. Did you know that over 1.6 billion pens are thrown away in the U.S. every year? When you use refillable pens, you have a more convenient option that won’t contribute to wastefulness.

Myobon.com provides a nice assortment of reasonably priced, environmentally friendly school supplies, including pencils made from recycled newspaper, notebooks made with sugarcane paper, PVC-free binders built from compressed and recycled cardboard and much more.

There and Back Again

While your parents and grandparents may have walked to school (uphill both ways), this isn’t as safe an option as it was back in their time. In more recent decades, being chauffeured to school became the norm for an entire generation of children. Over time, riding the bus somehow became uncool or inconvenient, so parents succumbed to the whining and started dropping off and picking up their kids, an impractical scenario both economically and ecologically. Your taxes already pay for the transportation, so why not take advantage of the “free” bus ride?

Another option for those who live close enough to walk to school is arranging for a “driver” to walk with them. The concept of a paid walking “driver” was born in 2003 in Lecco, Italy. Paid staff or family members escorted kids to school in a Pied Piper fashion, picking up more kids along the route. This safe mode of transport eliminated 100,000 miles of car travel in six years!

What’s for Lunch?

Ditch the brown bag and invest in a reusable, washable lunch box made from organic cotton or recycled materials such as juice boxes, avoiding plastics and vinyl. Keep lunches cold by freezing water in a reusable container and slipping it in beside the food while utilizing safe BPA-free containers for sandwiches, fruit and snacks so you can avoid lunch waste altogether. Stay away from pre-packaged foods, which are not eco-friendly, economical or healthy. For easy clean up, keep a supply of cloth napkins in fun fabrics. Challenge your kids to a trash-free lunch routine and reward them for their efforts with a special prize at the end of each report period.

Going green is much easier than you think. By starting off the school year on an eco-friendly foot, you can convince your kids to conserve more and waste less for a better school experience.
