Naughty or Nice – Santa’s Wine List

Nov 1, 2012   //   by wagona   //   The Wine Cellar  //  No Comments

By Gordon Gilbert

The holiday season is now in full swing, so it’s time to start making your list and checking it twice. Whether the names on your gift giving roll call have been on the good side or bad side, there is certainly a wine to be found in Santa’s bag of treats that’s perfect for each one of them.

Naughty

Capcanes Mas Donis Barica; Montsant, Spain; 2007 ($10)

This red wine hails from Catalonia in the north of Spain and has fantastic balance with plums, black cherry, red fruit and pepper. Predominantly Grenache (85%) with the remainder being Syrah, it’s a great value alternative to similar, more expensive propositions from nearby Priorat. Tannins and structure fall in the medium range, a great complement for burgers on the grill.

Indaba, Sauvignon Blanc; Western Cape, South Africa; 2011 ($8)

South Africa is another great destination for value oriented wines, particularly the Western Cape region, which is synonymous with good white wine. You’ll find a touch more body in their Sauvignon Blanc when compared to its New Zealand counterparts. Brisk refreshing acidity with fleshy notes of citrus and touches of green pepper match up nicely with a fresh green salad.

Not So Naughty

Molly Dooker, Shiraz, The Boxer; McLaren Vale, South Australia; 2010 ($19)

For those who love big, robust wines, look no further than this Shiraz from Molly Dooker (Australian slang for left-hander), with copious amounts of black fruit, including blackberry, blackcurrant and touches of Indian black pepper. Heavy tannins are offset by the lushness of warm fruit, making this weighty wine a nice pairing for an order of grilled lamb chops.

King Estate, Pinot Gris; Willamette Valley, Oregon; 2010 ($12)

While Oregon has gained much attention for its Pinot Noir, its cousin Pinot Gris is slowly emerging from the shadows. At times vastly superior to the abundant Italian Pinot Grigio that crowds most wine shelves, Oregon’s take is heavier than Italy’s and has a bracing acidity with notes of Anjou pear and Fuji apple. Smoked salmon with capers and dill is a culinary soul mate.

Nice

Chateau de Ferrand, St-Emilion Grand Cru; France; 2005 ($42)

A rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon with touches of cedar and light truffle notes. Solid tannins create a wonderful lengthy sensation on the palate. The 2005 vintage is hailed as one of the greatest in 50 years, which is reflected in prices for many 2005 Bordeaux wines. Those with more of a taste for new world wines will discover a marvelous complexity and nuance. Savor this one with a dinner that takes hours to prepare and just as long to enjoy.

Ridge, Chardonnay, Mountain Estate; Santa Cruz, California; 2009 ($36)

Ridge has been producing wines since the late 1960s and took part in the famous “Judgment of Paris,” where American wines beat out French counterparts in a blind tasting as seen in the movie Bottle Shock. Ridge Chardonnay is the epitome of the classic Californian food wine with a rich, full intensity accompanied by touches of navel orange, cantaloupe and delicate caramel. All that exquisite fullness is offset by an acidity that adds to the complex nature of the wine.

That Special Someone

Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes D’or Brut Vintage; 1999 ($100)

Pour yourself a glass of this wine to experience a lovely, delicate quality with effervescence focused on the front palate. Lying behind this are rich notes of brioche, pear, hints of citrus, acacia and ginger. The unmistakable packaging supposedly represents the black pearls worn by an early love of Nicolas Feuillatte. You can’t ask for a more perfect wine to ring in the new year.

A great wine makes a perfect gift for just about any friend, no matter their disposition. Naughty or nice, there’s a perfect wine out there for them. If you’re lucky, they might even share their gift with you, a gesture that could move a former Grinch right to the top of the nice list for next year.

Festive Festivities – Five Secrets to a Perfect Holiday Gathering

Nov 1, 2012   //   by wagona   //   For the Season  //  No Comments

By DeDee Birdsall

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season eating away at your already busy schedule, do you really have time to host a holiday party? Of course you do! The key to any memorable seasonal gathering is planning ahead. With a few simple hosting secrets, you can keep the stress of playing host or hostess at bay and marvel as your party becomes the talk of the neighborhood!

Secret # 1: Festive Focus (3 – 4 Weeks Before)

A party planning checklist can keep you focused and help avoid the bottlenecks and last minute frenzies that go into preparing for a holiday party. Organizers can be found online via a simple Google search, but you can get a jump on things a few weeks beforehand with these easy tasks:

  • Create your invitation list.
  • Send invitations via snail mail, e-mail or phone call.
  • Plan the menu and drinks and create your shopping list.
  • Create a holiday music playlist via iTunes or Pandora.com.
  • Decide on take-home gifts for your guests.
  • Enlist help for cleaning, organizing and running the party.

Secret #2: Deck the Halls (2 Weeks Before)

Decorating is a snap for holiday parties since most of the trimmings are already up and can be completed in advance, but make sure you focus your adornments on areas that your guests will see: the front door, entryway, restroom and the main entertaining areas. There’s no need to go over the top and spend lots of money. Lights and greenery are both beautiful and cost effective.

When it comes to decorating, don’t neglect your tablescape. With just a few holiday accents and some dressed up dishes, your bountiful feast provides the focal point for the entire gathering. Stage your platters and serving trays at varying heights to add plenty of elegance and depth.

Secret #3: Build Your Buffet (1 Week Before)

Ditch the sit-down dinner and opt for a festive hors d’oeuvre buffet to keep things simple. Stocking the pantry and preparing food ahead of time can help you pull things off with only a couple hours of prep. Consider laying out a few warm dishes along with some dips and sweet treats for variety. Chafing dishes will help avoid having to heat in the oven or crock pots and bring a touch of class to everyday dishes, particularly finger foods such as meatballs or eggrolls.

For sweet treats, roll out your finest holiday cookie and candy recipes and keep the portions small. Freezing cookies and bars is easy and can be done well in advance thanks to these tips:

  • Bars – Line pan with heavy duty aluminum foil sprayed with nonstick spray. After baking and cooling, remove the bars but do not cut them. Wrap completely in foil and again in heavy duty plastic wrap. Pull out of the freezer, thaw and cut before serving.
  • Baked cookies – Stack baked cookies between sheets of parchment paper in a disposable aluminum pan. Cover with heavy duty foil and plastic wrap. Freeze and thaw at room temperature the day of the party.

Set aside a drink station with bottled drinks in “help yourself” containers as simple as holiday adorned galvanized buckets filled with ice. If you don’t have enough glasses, invest in plastic disposables. Designating a signature drink or two is another great way to keep the spirit bright, but old standbys such as eggnog will delight guests with a nostalgic, once-a-year indulgence.

Secret #4: Small Favors (1 -2 Days Before)

Party favors make a great thank you gift and a perfect way to show some love to your loyal guests. Trees-to-Go make wonderful holiday mementos. These miniature evergreens can be planted in small tins with labels that include season’s greetings and tree care instructions.

Other ideas include baking small loaves of your favorite holiday breads wrapped in festive packages or creating “Jingle Jars” filled with batches of homemade spiced nuts decorated with ornaments, jingles bells and ribbon, also wrapped up nice and neat. Keep things simple but add your own dose of creativity. Arrange gifts near the door so guests can grab one as they depart.

Secret # 5: Holiday Ambience (Day of the Party)

Set the mood by dimming the lights, putting on some background music and burning a few candles – and don’t forget to include the scents of the season. Whether you use holiday candles, a Scentsy burner or simple plug-ins, nothing says holiday comfort like a room infused with signature aromas. Anything from pine tree to candy cane to gingerbread cookie works great!

With a little preparation, planning and a few simple secrets, you’re on your way to hosting the perfect holiday gathering and enjoying it just as much as everyone else. Relax and greet your guests like the hostess with mostest and you’re sure to have a holiday get-together to remember.

Peppermint Martini

If you’re still looking for a signature drink to help spice things up a bit, try this tasty peppermint martini for a dose of the holidays in a glass.

Serves 10

2 ½ cups white chocolate liqueur
1 ¼ cups peppermint schnapps
1 ¼ cups vodka
Corn syrup
Crushed peppermint candies

Crush candies in a food processor. Dip rim of glass on corn syrup. In a shaker, combine 1 cup of white chocolate liqueur, ½ cup schnapps, ½ cup vodka and ice. Shake and strain into martini glasses. Repeat twice with remaining ingredients. Serve immediately.

Perfect Score

Anyone who’s ever taken a trip to the bowling alley with friends knows that rolling a perfect game is next to impossible. Twelve strikes in a row seems like such an incredible feat that most of us never even think about achieving it. Irma Wenzel, 79, did more than just think about it – she did it! A member of the senior league at Red Rock Lanes at Red Rock Resort, Irma hit the perfect score of 300 during league play on September 26th and was presented with a commemorative trophy.

Irma has played at Red Rock Lanes since the center opened along with the property in 2006, and league play brings her to the bowling alley at least twice a week. While her feat was undeniably impressive, Irma’s no stranger to big accomplishments. This lifetime athlete has also hiked the Alps and once won the national pistol championships more than a half century ago. With a perfect bowling game now under her belt, Irma has one more incredible exploit to add to her list.
Pumpkin Cupcake Cocktail

1 ½ oz. Stoli apple vodka

½ oz. yellow chartreuse liqueur
½ oz. lemon juice
¼ oz. simple syrup

Making a Difference

Martin Lawrence Galleries

Trauma care is one of the most important services a community can provide to its citizens, particularly for those suffering from burn injuries. If these resources don’t operate efficiently, it can mean the difference between life and death. Thanks to a generous gift from Martin Lawrence Galleries, patients at UMC’s Trauma and Burn Care Center will continue to have a fighting chance.

Located inside The Forum Shops at Caesars, Martin Lawrence Galleries is one of the world’s largest privately owned galleries, and their recent donation shows their commitment to helping the lives of others. The gallery recently presented representatives from UMC’s Trauma and Burn Care Center with a check for $5,669, a donation gathered through proceeds from ticket sales and a raffle from the recent “Art of the Party” gala hosted inside the impressive location. Furthering the partnership between the two organizations, a portion of proceeds raised through sales at a public art auction held on September 29th also went to support the life saving work of the Trauma and Burn Care Center, which is Nevada’s only Level One trauma facility.

The worlds of fine art and emergency medicine don’t often collide, but thanks to the giving people at Martin Lawrence Galleries, UMC’s Trauma and Burn Care Center will continue to provide attentive, state of the art care for those suffering from unforeseen tragedies.

For more information on Martin Lawrence Galleries, visit www.martinlawrence.com.

Winder Farms, Mac King & The Public Education Foundation

We’re always told that reading is fundamental, but students at Gordon M. McCaw Elementary School learned just how fun it can be as well. The school received a special treat on October 16th as Winder Farms, comedy magician Mac King and The Public Education Foundation surprised them with a visit that included lots of new and used books and a generous monetary donation.

The visit marked the culmination of the Second Annual Delivering Magic Book Drive, which has provided local public elementary schools with much needed funds and books. Winder Farms customers donated books and were rewarded with free tickets to Mac King’s Comedy Magic Show along with the chance to help direct money toward the public elementary school of their choice. McCaw Elementary received a donation of $2,500 as part of a special assembly that featured a performance by King, who delighted the crowd with magic tricks and spoke about the importance of reading. Winder Farms representatives were also on hand to pass out fresh fruit and chocolate milk, and students were able to meet “Mookie” the Winder Farms mascot.

For students across the valley, the importance of literacy will always be paramount. Thanks to help from people such as Mac King and groups like Winder Farms and The Public Education Foundation, local children will continue to experience all the wonder books have to offer.

Neon Lights, Festive Nights – Christmas in the Desert

Nov 1, 2012   //   by wagona   //   Livin' Local  //  No Comments

By Mike Sweeney

When most people think of Christmas, Las Vegas probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Our miles of outlying desert and neon canyons of mega resorts don’t exactly define the holiday spirit. But if you look beneath the surface during this festive time of year, our community comes alive with new energy and a seasonal excitement that rivals the North Pole.

Holiday Escapes

Part of the fun of spending Christmas in Las Vegas is discovering the local traditions that can transport you out of the desert and into another world. None of these holiday extravaganzas are more spectacular than Winter in Venice, held at the Venetian and Palazzo from November 18th through January 6th. This magical showcase carries you far from the arid sandscape of Southern Nevada and into a new world steeped in rich folklore and old world Italian splendor. Holiday displays and 3-D light shows share space with roving entertainers such as stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians, puppeteers and more. Enjoy a whimsical nightly parade filled with colorful characters hailing from traditional Italian tales and stories, then skate to your heart’s content at the outdoor ice rink located above the Venetian’s Grand Canal, offering spectacular views of the resort’s hallmark gondolas. Visit www.venetian.com or www.palazzo.com for more information.

For a journey sure to transport you into the land of holiday enchantment, board the Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City. During the second, third and fourth weekends in December, you can join a festive railway for a 45-minute ride that includes a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. It’s like Southern Nevada’s own personal Polar Express. While you wait to board, have the little ones send off their letters to St. Nick at Santa’s Mailbox, then take a ride on the NSRM 503 train to visit the “bone yard” of unrestored equipment or witness demonstration runs from the 1875 Eureka steam locomotive. Whether you’re a railroad enthusiast or just looking for a fun holiday ride, this should get your Christmas season started on the right track. Visit www.nevadasouthern.com for tickets and information.

The Light Fantastic

The blazing lights of Las Vegas Boulevard can be seen for miles, but when the holidays roll around, the neon glow of the Strip isn’t the only vivid display you’ll find in town. The Lakes Festival of Lights, held December 8th at The Lakes near West Sahara, brings a colorful spectacle of decorated boats to wow young and old alike. An impressive flotilla draws cheers from the crowd as the festive, sparkling vessels drift across Lake Sahara, casting their hypnotic glow on the still waters. In addition to the boat parade, the event also features a wide range of live family entertainment, arts and crafts, a car show, a petting zoo and visits with Santa. Best of all, this is a hometown local event through and through, completely planned, organized and operated by unpaid community volunteers. Visit festival.lakesassociation.com for more information.

That same festive twinkle can be found in many other locations off the Strip, including the amazing Holiday Spectacular at the Springs Preserve, held this year on December 8th – 9th and 15th – 23rd. The desert comes alive with the glow of thousands of beautiful LED lights, all eco-friendly, as one would expect from the Preserve. From tasty treats to holiday arts and crafts to photos with Santa, this family event has enough Christmas spirit to light up your season brighter than the biggest casinos. Take a detour into the Springs Café for delicious dishes, desserts and seasonal beverages, then head outside to enjoy the live entertainment by high school madrigal singers and other local artists. You can even get a jump on the festival with the snowman building contest and create your own Frosty to be displayed along the garden Snowman Stroll. As the lights turn on, you and your family are sure to feel the glow in your hearts as these glittering festivities brighten up your desert night with the sights and sounds of a Vegas holiday happening. Call 822-7700 or visit www.springspreserve.org for tickets and information.

Visions of Sugar Plums

With the recent opening of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, a touch of class and sophistication has been added to the Las Vegas cultural landscape. The stage comes to life this holiday season as the new home for the Nevada Ballet Theatre’s performance of The Nutcracker, with seven shows running from December 15th – 23rd. Set to Tchaikovsky’s elegant classical music score, this Las Vegas tradition immerses audiences in an extraordinary fantasy world filled with magic, romance, pageantry and an entire Land of Sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. Artistic director and choreographer James Canfield joins with the creative forces of scenery and prop designer Patricia Ruel and costume designer Sandra Woodall for this imaginative showcase of a timeless favorite. It’s a refined holiday gem well worth unearthing from the desert sands this December. Call 982-7805 or visit www.thesmithcenter.com for tickets and information.

No matter where you hail from, the holidays are always a cause for joyous celebration. But don’t feel like you need to pack your bags and rush out of town because you’re thinking there’s no seasonal magic to be found in our desert home. From ballet to festivals to train rides with Santa, Las Vegas has all the holiday charm you need to make your Christmas season a memorable one.

The ingredients are always fresh and made from scratch, all the way down to the sauces, including the ranch for their bountiful chicken wings. For pizza aficionados, the crust is thin and hand tossed, with a sauce made from fresh tomatoes and herbs. Their cheesesteak comes with certified Angus beef ribeye, and they even make their own sausage and bacon. As they like to say, if they can make it fresh better than they can buy it, they will! Taste the difference for yourself today at Those Guys Pies.
