Metered Phone Numbers
Great news! The Zip Code Magazines are now offering Metered Phone Numbers to our advertisers for only $25 per month.
What are those? “Metered” phone numbers are customized phone numbers that are used to track effectiveness of advertising. You will have a specific phone number on your advertisement that directs to your business phone. Each time a customer calls the phone number from your ad the call will be tracked, and can even be recorded.
How do I get one? It’s simple. If you have questions or would like to purchase a customized phone number for your next ad, just contact your account representative and he or she will get you all set up.
Ad Inspiration
Throughout my career I’ve seen a LOT of advertisements. Some were good, some were dismal (I mean, really bad) and then there are also a few that have stuck in my mind through the years as examples of pure excellence in this industry. They were ads that made someone stop and pay attention and, most importantly, follow through with a call to action or remember a brand when he or she truly needed a product or service.
These are the ads we always strive for – the ones that “stand out” for whatever reason.
Since it’s Friday, and we all need a little fun, creative inspiration at the end of a long week, I’ve decided to share this article I found with examples of truly great advertisements. Note the things you like and the things you dislike (we all have different tastes), but most importantly note what you think is most effective. I challenge you to incorporate something you liked into your next ad campaign to see if it makes a difference in response. Next time I’ll share a few tried and true methods to test ad ROI and effectiveness but, until then, take a break and enjoy these examples of creativity at its finest.
See you around the neighborhood,
Greg

The Beautiful Brewskie – Las Vegas and the Craft Beer Invasion.
It’s hot. I mean really hot. It’s, like, stick a fork in me I’m cooked to temperature hot…and the only thing that can bring me satisfaction – that can cool me down and relieve that persistent sticky, fatigued feeling – is a cold and frothy mug of hoppy goodness. I’m not talking about a lager from a can, either. No – I need big flavor. I crave the crisp bite of an IPA or the smooth clove-y spice of a Wit.
I. Want. A. Beer.
Don’t get me wrong – I have nothing against the staples. Few things top off a lake day or a camping trip quite like the icy blue mountains of a Silver Bullet, but when it comes to tasting, eating and appreciating the art of the suds – you’ve got to go with the crafts. For so long, wine has been the booze of the connoisseur, but no more. It’s the cicerone’s time to shine – and for you that means craft breweries and beer-centric restaurants popping up all over town.
Here are just a few:
Downtown
Banger Brewing
450 Fremont St., Suite 135
Open Daily Hours Vary
www.bangerbrewing.com | 456.BREW (2739)
We’ll start our beer hopping journey downtown at the Neonopolis Complex in the Fremont Street Experience for a real tasting treat at local craft brewery (and the only one in the Fremont Street Experience) Banger Brewing.
Opened in late December 2013, the clean, inviting bar with open area café style seating and a direct view to the brewery through a large window is run by five tight-knit service industry vets. Let me tell you, these guys know how to brew a beer. They were running about 10 beers on tap when we visited, and we truly enjoyed every one of them. For the hop-lover (yours truly) try the Perfect 10 Pale Ale, and for some smooth malty goodness go for the DTB Brown Ale. Not to be missed during the hot summer months, and one of my personal favorites, is the Sandia Watermelon Wheat. Just like it sounds, this refreshing and easy-drinking brew gives the perfect hint of our favorite summer staple. Really, though, you can’t go wrong and I would suggest a flight with four tasters, priced reasonably at $7.
Best thing about this place? It ranks refreshingly low on the Snooty Scale. The staff was happy to talk with you about the beers, and never “beer shamed” us for not knowing something. Combine that with the tasty brews and they get an A Plus in my book.

Bier Garten
1 South Main St.
Open Daily 11 a.m. to Midnight
www.biergartenlv.com| 386-2110
Just down the street from Banger Brewing, it’s my bet that Bier Garten will soon be known as “the place with real grass and the living wall in downtown Vegas,” but it’s oh so much more than that. In fact, this not-so-hidden gem is reminiscent of a backyard BBQ, but with awesome people watching, gourmet brats and (arguably most important in the context of this article) a beer list on steroids.
Brain-child of Pop Up Pizza dream team, Sam Cherry and Grant Garcia, the vibe of this Bavarian-inspired watering hole is a perfect fit for downtown. A welcome addition to the newly remodeled Plaza Hotel & Casino, sizzling concrete has been covered with 3,000 square feet of real grass and over 900 plants scale the side wall of the casino backing up to it. Long, family-style tables shipped gen-you-eyen from 1980’s Munich Oktoberfest surround a patio of wooden trellis and vine, fully-equipped with TV’s. With live music from local artists on the weekends, shade after 2 p.m. and a perfect view of Main Street downtown, it easily makes the list of cool hangouts. Then, you catch a glimpse of the beer menu. Come to mama… Twelve rotating craft beers on tap are rounded out with a literal smorgasbord of bottled microbrews, both domestic and import. There were some on the list like Wells Banana Nut (if you like the “sweet” brews this one is right up your alley) and Big Dogs Dirty Dog IPA that neither my husband nor I had ever heard of – and we try a lot of beer.
If you’re a newbie, head chef Jeffrey Martell (also of Oscar’s steakhouse and Pop Up Pizza) does you a solid by pairing all of his tasty brats with the perfect “cold one.” We threw back The Stardust (German brat, caramelized onions, Sauerkraut and German sweet mustard) with a medium-bodied Brooklyn Brewery Brown Ale and The Hacienda (Sweet Italian sausage, roaster sweet peppers, caramelized onions and spicy Giardiniera) with the tasty and clean Belgian Pranqster by North Coast Brewing Co. They hit the spot.
Visit www.biergartenlv.com for the full menu, pricing and more information. Your beer buds will not be disappointed.
Your Neck of the Woods
Bad Beat Brewing
7380 Eastgate Rd Suite 110
Open Thurs. – Sun. hours vary
www.badbeatbrewing.com

Photos Courtesy of: Kat Okula
Not in the mood to trek it downtown? There’s a new joint in your neck of the woods that’s worth betting on. Bad Beat Brewing, a locally owned craft brewery, recently celebrated its grand opening in the up-and-coming Booze District (including Las Vegas Distillery, Grape Expectations and more).
On top of the neighborhood feel (complete with dartboard, shuffleboard and a certain über popular black-and-white boxed card game on one of the bar tables) this place also boasts some super tasty and interesting beer. If you’re looking for a flavor adventure try the uniquely brewed “Ace in the Hole” pale ale. With a hint of basil, it’s one of the more refreshing I’ve tried. Another favorite was the “Bluffing isn’t weisse” Hefeweizen with strong banana notes and a pleasantly smooth finish. All the beers I tried ($8 for a five-beer taster) were worth a second glass.
There’s no food, but the Director of Imbibing Operations, Mike D. assured me food trucks would frequent the parking lot on weekends.

Las Vegas Firefighters Join Professional Hockey Players in Game to Benefit Las Vegas Firefighter Youth Hockey Charity
Las Vegas Valley Firefighters, in conjunction with current and former professional hockey players, will be participating in a match-up on August 23, 2014, in order to raise money for the Las Vegas Firefighter Youth Hockey Charity.
Twelve Las Vegas Firefighters will be participating in this one-hour event at 5:30 p.m. at the Sobe Ice Arena, in the Fiesta Hotel and Casino, with adult tickets selling at $10 and children (under 12) tickets selling at $5 at Sobe Ice Arena box office. During the event, the Las Vegas Firefighters will unveil and sell their 2015 Las Vegas Firefighter Calendars (featuring local firefighters) to raise additional funds, and also be raffling off hockey sticks signed by the NHL/ECHL hockey players. Hockey players include:
- Chris Francis, former Las Vegas Wranglers player
- Eric Lacroix, former Colorado Avalanche player
- Stéphane Yelle, former Stanley Cup winner
- Jason Zucker, Minnesota Wild player (National Hockey League)
- Deryk Engelland, Calgary Flames player (National Hockey League)
Eric Littmann, Las Vegas Firefighter and organizer of the event, says, “Last year, we were able to raise $5,000 with this event, and this year we are hoping to surpass that amount. Hockey is the ultimate team sport, and it is our goal to fulfill the dreams of local children who want to play, but may not have the means.”
The Las Vegas Firefighter Youth Hockey Charity assists local children to participate in hockey. This includes funding for travel to different states to compete and equipment.
CSN Announces 2014-15 “Behind the Curtain” Theatre Season
The BackStage Theatre at the College of Southern Nevada will be home to all four theatre productions being staged by the Department of Fine Arts Theatre Program.
Calling the season “Behind the Curtain,” new theatre faculty member Aaron Tuttle has announced the play selections, all chosen with the black box setting of the BackStage Theatre in mind, and he says, “Each of theses plays were chosen because they show some aspect ‘behind the curtain’ of the theatre. The theme of these productions plays perfectly in the fittingly named BackStage Theatre. We will encourage as many students as possible to be involved, either onstage or behind the scenes.”
Annie Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation” opens the season Oct. 10-19. This comedy/drama, which won the 2009 Obie Award for Best New American Play, traces the lives of a handful of small-town New Englanders who enroll in a 6-week drama class at a local community center.
“The Sea Gull,” by Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov, will run Nov. 14-23. Written in 1895, this classic play of the modern theatre is considered an ensemble piece that explores love, missed connections, and what it means to be an artist in the theatre. “Every theatre student should know Chekhov and The Sea Gull,” says Tuttle.
The weekend of Feb. 26 to Mar. 1 will be Spring Shorts, a collection of short plays that will bring something for everyone.
The season closes with Tom Stoppard’s hilarious “The Real Inspector Hound,” which runs April 10-19. Theatre critics Moon and Birdboot are swept into this Agatha Christie-style murder-mystery in this absurd play-within-a-play. Tuttle says, “This comedy was specifically chosen so that student actors can fine-tune their comedic acting skills.”
Also onstage at CSN will be “Macbeth,” Feb. 6 and 7, in the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre, as the Utah Shakespeare Festival touring ensemble returns to CSN as part of the Performing Arts Center’s annual SchoolFest.
Admission for all the plays is $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. Call the Ticket Office at 651-LIVE (5483) for additional information or to request a season brochure, or visit www.csn.edu/pac.
In its 20th season of providing quality artistic, cultural, educational and entertainment opportunities for the college and the community, the CSN Performing Arts Center is located at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., one mile east of I-15 North.
FIRST BITCOIN ATM LAUNCHES ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP Bitcoin continues to move mainstream as Coin Cloud opens a Robocoin ATM on the busiest corner on the Las Vegas Strip
Gucci, Prada, Louis… and now Bitcoin! Coin Cloud opens the “Bitcoin Bodega” with the Las Vegas Strip’s first bitcoin ATM. Located inside the Viva Vegas souvenir shop that surpasses 100,000 in daily foot traffic, the Bitcoin Bodega is on the bustling intersection of Las Vegas Blvd., just south of Harmon Blvd. across from ARIA Resort & Casino and shopping mecca Crystals at City Center.
The Bitcoin Bodega highlights a recent trend in bitcoin tourism, providing digital currency enthusiasts with a quick, easy and safe means to buy or sell bitcoin. No more carrying cash on planes or dealing with strict bank limitations and holidays. Tourists can now store money digitally and withdraw cash from the Bitcoin Bodega as soon as they arrive on the Las Vegas Strip.
The kiosk is centrally located within walking distance of most Las Vegas casinos. The location provides convenient drive-up parking and a security guard on site at all times. A partnership led by Chris McAlary, a bitcoin trader and former bitcoin miner, and his Pomona College roommate and Las Vegas native, Joshua Schlachter Esq., will operate the Robocoin Kiosk.
“In partnering with Robocoin, Coin Cloud has been able to deploy the first bitcoin ATM on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Chris McAlary, owner of Coin Cloud. “I’m pleased to provide the vast Las Vegas marketplace with the highest quality of product and access to the joy of bitcoin.”
Bitcoin Bodega is open 7 days a week; 8am to 12pm at the Viva Vegas souvenir shop located at 3735 Las Vegas Blvd S. Las Vegas, NV 89109-4308.
CASA FOUNDATION SENDS FOSTER KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL ON A POSITIVE NOTE
The CASA Foundation, a local non-profit organization, is partnering with Square Salon to sponsor a special back-to-school event for foster children. The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. PDT, Sunday, August 10 at Square Salon, located at 1225 South Fort Apache Blvd. (at the intersection of Charleston and Fort Apache across from Mimi’s Restaurant).
The CASA Foundation is calling on Las Vegas locals to help make a difference for children in foster care by donating backpacks and school supplies for the event.
“The beginning of the school year can be a scary and stressful time for these children” said Mary Giuliano, who serves as the CASA Board of Directors. “Children in foster care typically do not experience the stability and security of a traditional family home, a basic emotional need that most of us take for granted every day. This unique event is designed to get these kids excited, cleaned up and ready to go back to school.”
For the third year in a row, Square Salon is hosting a day of pampering for these special children, with plans to help approximately 300 kids this year. All children in attendance will receive a shampoo, haircut and blow dry along with a manicure and take home a backpack filled with school supplies. There will also be food, music, balloons and a photo booth.
The CASA foundation raises money to support Clark County children in foster care that are faced with a myriad of unmet financial needs that exceed governmental funding. Currently there are more than 3,500 children in foster care in Clark County alone. For more information on becoming a donor or the event itself, please contact Nancy Myster at (702) 497-2002 or Madison at (702) 588-2722. To donate a backpack or school supplies please bring to Square Salon on or before August 3, 2014.
