  • • Vance Scholarship ($82,000), 2013
  • • Trustee Scholarship ($76,000), 2013
  • • Habitat for Humanity, 2011-12

Accomplishments Most Proud Of: “I am most proud of my admittance into the highly selective University of Puget Sound and being recruited to play volleyball at the collegiate level. I have spent the past five years playing volleyball year round, and I am so glad that I can continue to play a sport that I love. Volleyball is my passion, and I am ecstatic that all of the time and effort, travel, and sacrifice have paid off.”

Riley is Stronger and Wiser Because: “I have always been the shortest person on all my volleyball teams. Most people dismissed my chances to play volleyball at a competitive level, but being 5’5” only made me more determined. I practiced, played year round and kept my grades up so I could increase my chances to play at the collegiate level. I’ve learned firsthand that it’s not just what you have that matters, it’s what you do with what you have that counts.”

Part of the Solution: “Many young adults are not exposed to interpersonal communication. Technology encourages texting instead of talking and that may prove to be a huge disadvantage in their future endeavors. I am majoring in Business Leadership, and I hope I can help develop a verbally challenged generation into effective communicators, team players, and more altruistic members of society.”

With strong faith, unyieldingresolve and a firm sense of personal accountability, Brianna refuses to let herself be defined by other’s perceptions; she’s comfortable and self assured just being who she is, and she knows exactly what she wants out of life. For all that and more, Brianna Ballard stands – A Step Above.

·       St. Timothy’s Church Thanksgiving Volunteer, 2007-Present
·       Chemistry Tutor, 2011-12
·       Volunteer for Construction of Foothills Montessori School, 2008

Accomplishments Most Proud Of: “I am proud of my diligence in school. While most of my friends gave up on math and their grades, they were important to me. I studied every night to get into classes where others often had challenges. I was able to accomplish this while doing all my extra-curricular activities throughout the year, which was very hard.”

Brianna Looks Up To: “I look up to my mom. She is kind, humorous, and strong. She works so hard for us every day just to make sure we are taken care of. She doesn’t let social norms define her. She is her own person, and I admire her for that. She always encouraged me when I was down, and she’s the reason why I know I can succeed in whatever I try.”

Part of the Solution: “I think one big issue with our generation of young adults is the lack of true self-confidence. We seem to put on a veil of self-assurance, but in reality, most young people are not sure of themselves at all. I would create a positive self-image campaign to convince the youth, especially young girls, that they are beautiful inside and out. Everyone deserves to feel accepted and loved.”

  • Volunteer at Shade Tree, 2009-12

Accomplishments Most Proud Of: “I am most proud of being elected as WCTA’s first Student Body President and having the opportunity to be included in my high school’s first graduating class of 2013. My perspective on leadership positions is that they are the best opportunities to serve others, and I am always the happiest when I can do something for someone else.”

Elsie Looks Up To: “I look up to my best friend of six years, Elizabeth Burdett. She has always embraced her unique and fun personality without regard to others’ opinions of her. Today, she is president of her high school’s National Honor Society and led the planning and execution of a Color Run with NHS for her high school and the entire town in Rolla, Missouri.”

Part of the Solution: “A key issue facing young adults today, especially at my school, is a sense of identity. If there was a stronger focus on mentoring youths individually to help them find out who they are and who they want to become, this issue could be met. Each person has specific needs and abilities, and oftentimes adolescents require one with a larger perspective to help address these needs and inspire them to make important decisions that will impact their lives.”

Cause for Concern: “I would be president of the American Cancer Society. I was affected by cancer in so many ways. Accomplishments Most Proud Of: “I am most proud of earning All American and Gatorade Player of the Year. It is an honor to know that all of my hard work has paid off, not only from my club and high school coaches but also from coaches that I do not know.”

Nicole Looks Up To: “I have looked up to Kayla Varner since freshman year. It was good to have a leader like Kayla on the team, who was such a hard worker on the field but also a person who could have fun.”

Nicole is Stronger and Wiser Because: “One obstacle that has made me a stronger person was growing up in a single parent household. While other children had more time to play, I had more responsibilities. As I look back, it influenced my life drastically. It made me work harder for things and be more responsible with household duties.”

Cause for Concern: “If I could be the president of any nonprofit organization, I would choose Nevada’s Coalition of Suicide Prevention, because during “We R Community” I got the chance to work with Linda Flatt, the founder of the organization, and it was an amazing experience to make people aware of this issue.”

Accomplishments Most Proud Of: “I am most proud of our whole tennis team for finally bringing back that State Champions trophy. For the past few years we have consistently made it to the finals, but year after year we would fall just short. This year, we went up to Reno with a dead mindset that nothing short of first place was good enough. After a hard-fought battle in the finals which was forced into an extra tiebreaker, our team was finally able to come out on top.”

Troy is Successful Because: “I attribute my success to the people around me. I’ve got such a strong support system from family and friends that help me with everything I do. If I ever wanted to try and do something, I can always count on them to support me. My family and friends are the reason I’m where I’m at, and without them, I wouldn’t be half the person I am today.”

Troy Looks Up To: “My dad came to the United States with literally nothing after escaping from communist Vietnam as a child, and through hard work and commitment, he has become a successful doctor and business owner here in Henderson. He really exemplifies the possibilities that can be achieved when you focus your efforts into a goal and act upon it.”
